AWANA
Our AWANA children's ministry thrives with music, fast paced games and Bible memorization. Through their study, children earn AWANA dollars to buy treasures at the AWANA "store". The acronym AWANA comes from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15). The commander of our group for 2009-2010 is Nye Pelton. He can be contacted directly at 308-472-3890. 2010-2011 Westmark AWANA Leaders and HelpersLeadership:Commander - Nye Pelton Office help - Kami Ackerman Game Leaders - Kory Kennicutt, Kirk Edgren Cubbies (preK) Leader - Amber Brown Sparks (l & 2) - Shari Kuck; Assistants: Sheila Philips & Don Holen Truth & Training (3-6 grades) T & T Boys (3 & 4) -Keith Samuelson; Assistants--Lisa Kennicutt & Don Holen T & T Girls (3 & 4) - Selena Kiger; Assistant--Sheila Philips T & T Boys (5 & 6) - Evan Brown; Assistant--Mark Nelson T & T Girls (5 & 6) - Keri Maloley; Assistant--Alice LeBlanc Store Manager - Shari Kuck Music - Dan Schwarz, Shari Kuck Listeners - Kris Kuck, Don Holen, Ruth Nelson, Allison Snodgrass Many others help out too--especially with listening to the kids recite their Scripture memory verses. Consider letting us add your name to this list! Welcome! To all of you who are joining us this year and would like to know a little more about Westmark's AWANA program, we'll make this as understandable as possible. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the adult leaders and helpers. We'll do our best to help you. REQUIREMENTS: Do your best to learn your AWANA Scripture memory verses and have fun. God's Word is important, so we work to hide His Word in our hearts and become what our motto stands for: Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed --- 2 Timothy 3:17 1.We start promptly at 6:30 in the basement by saying the pledge to the American flag, then to the AWANA flag, and then we pray. 2. The older (grades 3-6) and younger groups (grades K-2) will divide up. One group will play games downstairs while the other group will go upstairs to show their leaders what they've worked on all week at home. The kids earn AWANA dollars for all this hard work, plus points for their team (red, yellow, green or blue). To earn points, each child should bring their AWANA book, wear their AWANA shirt, bring their BIBLE, bring an offering, and if they go to Sunday School anywhere, they can get credit for that too. At the end of the night we tally up the scores and reward the high-scoring team. This encourages everyone to do their best and requires teamwork. We enlist the help of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and guardians to be listening ears--it's a great way to interact with the kids. (Adults--Please volunteer if possible!) 3. Game time is so much fun! We do all kinds of wacky things, thanks to our game leaders. The kids also earn points for their team. We try to encourage a healthy balance between competition and sportsmanship. Safety is always a must too, so please have your child wear their AWANA shirt and athletic shoes for running. 4. For the last part of the evening, we all join together in the social hall for singing and praising our Lord. After this we have a "counsel time"--we invite a special speaker to talk to the kids about a variety of topics that help them understand more about Jesus and our relationship with Him. 5. During the final part of the evening, we announce the big winners of the night and any special events or achievements. About once a month we open the AWANA store, where the kids have an opportunity to spend the AWANA "dollars" they've earned and/or give to help support our AWANA missions project. We hope this explains our program, and we hope to see your kids (and you, too, parents.) If you can help defray the cost of books, shirts and materials for your AWANA child ($10 for the year), this would be greatly appreciated. For any questions you can call our AWANA Commander Nye Pelton at (308) 472-3890.
