Our History

Where did we come from?

Westmark Church was organized November 19, 1880 by Swedish missionary-evangelist Fredrick Franson. The homesteaders and immigrant farmers of this rural community met in sod homes for Sunday School and Worship Services until the first building was erected on this location in 1883. The Swedish language was used in worship services and business meetings until it was officially changed to "the American language" in 1929. Franson later founded what became "The Evangelical Alliance Mission", now TEAM, and Westmark has had a long association with that mission agency.

A commitment to missions, music and youth has characterized the ministry at Westmark from its beginning. For all of its history, the congregation has been a large, active rural congregation with 100-150 persons attending worship on Sunday mornings. The congregation currently meets in a building that was dedicated in August of 1964 and was enlarged in 1982. The congregation remained independent until 1966, when it affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America.
